C-WINS Joins Forces with the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum to Champion Measles-Rubella Vaccination in Nigeria
The Centre for Well-being and Integrated Nutrition Solutions (C-WINS) is excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership with the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum (NGSF) to spearhead the introduction of the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine across the nation. The NGSF, a coalition of governors' spouses from Nigeria’s 36 states, has long been a driving force in championing women’s and children’s health. Their passion, influence, and extensive networks at the governance and sub-national levels make them a formidable ally in achieving the ambitious goal of 95% MR vaccine coverage.
Why the MR Vaccine Matters
Measles and Rubella are serious diseases with potentially devastating consequences, especially for children. Measles can lead to severe complications like pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death, while Rubella poses significant risks, including birth defects when contracted during pregnancy. The MR vaccine offers a safe, effective solution to prevent these diseases and protect Nigeria's future generations.
The introduction of the MR vaccine in Nigeria is a monumental public health effort. It requires not only robust government commitment and funding but also widespread community engagement to ensure every child, especially in rural and underserved areas, receives this life-saving intervention.
A Partnership with Purpose
Recognizing the importance of leadership in public health advocacy, C-WINS partnered with the NGSF to drive this initiative forward. During our meeting, the NGSF committed to mobilizing women’s groups, families, and communities across all 36 states to ensure the MR vaccine campaign’s success.
“Our role is to ensure no child is left behind,” said an NGSF Chairperson, Ambassador Professor Olufolake Abdulrazaq, the First Lady of Kwara State. “We are passionate about leveraging our influence and platforms to protect Nigeria’s children from preventable diseases.”
Through this collaboration, C-WINS and the NGSF will work to:
- Secure government support and funding to scale up MR vaccine rollout.
- Raise public awareness about the importance and benefits of MR vaccination.
- Ensure high coverage is achieved and maintained, integrating the vaccine into routine immunization programs post-introduction.
A Vision for the Future
This partnership represents more than just a campaign—it’s a movement to create a healthier, stronger Nigeria. With the support of the NGSF, C-WINS aims to reach every corner of the country, ensuring that no child is left vulnerable to preventable diseases.
“Our collaboration with the NGSF is a major milestone in our advocacy efforts,” said a C-WINS Head of Mission, Dr Mahmud Mustafa. “With their leadership and commitment, we are confident that we can achieve widespread acceptance and coverage of the MR vaccine.”
In her remarks, the Project Team Lead, Dr Nihinlola Mabogunje expressed optimism that the MR advocacy train is moving forward and will support Nigeria to attain 95% coverage during campaign and sustain the results through routine vaccination. She called on the public to join C-WINS and her partners in ensuring that no child eligible for vaccination is. Left behind.
