CommCare Connect Child Health Campaign
About The Project
The WellMe Pilot Program for Frontline Health Workers is a digital intervention initiative aimed at enhancing the well-being and resilience of 100 frontline health workers in Dutsin-ma and Kurfi Local Government Areas of Katsina State (July – November 2023).
- Implement and promote the WellMe application among frontline health workers.
- Assess user engagement and progress within the App.
- Support and gauge the resilience of health workers.
- Promote continuous learning and self-assessment.
- Equip workers with knowledge and skills in resilience and stress management.
- Build comprehensive resilience both professionally and personally.
The program utilised the WellMe application, focusing on providing tailored support to healthcare professionals to cope with stressors, manage burnout, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Our approach included:
- Orientation and on-boarding of principal staff.
- Stakeholder engagement with government and partners.
- Training of frontline health workers.
- Field visits for program evaluation and direct feedback.
- Data collection and analysis for program impact assessment.
- Improved well-being and resilience of frontline health workers, as evidenced by significant increases in their scores on the Resilience Scale and the Well-Being Index.
- Enhanced knowledge and skills of frontline health workers on coping strategies, self-care, stress management, and work-life balance, as reported by health workers in the post-intervention interviews.
- Increased awareness and appreciation of frontline health workers’ contributions and challenges, as demonstrated by positive feedback from their families, colleagues, organizations, media, and the public – Strengthened partnership and collaboration between Dimagi and the Katsina State Ministry of Health, as well as other stakeholders involved in the project.
- Technical issues with the WellMe application, such as bugs, crashes, and slow loading, which affected health workers’ user experience and engagement. The project team resolved these issues by providing regular updates and troubleshooting support to health workers, as well as working closely with the WellMe developers to fix the problems.
- Cultural and linguistic barriers, such as health workers’ unfamiliarity with some of the concepts and terms used in the WellMe application, as well as their preference for local languages over English. The project team addressed these barriers by adapting and translating some of the WellMe content to suit the local context and culture, as well as providing health workers with additional explanations and examples when needed.
- Security and safety concerns, such as health workers’ fear of contracting COVID-19, as well as facing stigma and discrimination from their communities. The project team mitigated these concerns by ensuring that health workers had adequate personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as providing them with psychosocial support and advocacy through the WellMe application and other channels.
- The WellMe application is a valuable and innovative tool for supporting the well-being and resilience of frontline health workers, especially during a pandemic. It has been shown to effectively deliver evidence-based and tailored content and resources to health workers, creating a supportive and interactive environment for them to learn and practice resilience-building behaviors.
- Additionally, the WellMe application has demonstrated adaptability and customization to suit different contexts, cultures, as well as various types of health workers and their unique needs. This adaptability allows for the possibility of scaling up and replicating the WellMe application in other settings and countries, with appropriate modifications and considerations.
- Furthermore, the WellMe application can complement and enhance other interventions and initiatives aimed at improving the well-being and resilience of frontline health workers. It can be integrated and coordinated with other stakeholders and partners, including the government, the media, the public, and various organizations, to create a holistic and sustainable approach to supporting frontline health workers.
